Earlier today, Sara Grady, Director of Domestic Violence Prevention and Intervention Services at Haven House, gave the first presentation of the Haven House Domestic Violence Awareness Month Speakers Series.

In her webinar, “Shining a Light on Domestic Violence,” Sara described that domestic violence makes an impact on each of us. She explained, “One in four women and one in nine men are survivors of domestic violence. Even if you are not aware of it, someone in your life is a survivor.”

While physical abuse is perhaps the most frequently considered form of domestic violence, Sara talked about other types – including emotional and psychological abuse. One of the most common tactics used in psychological abuse is to isolate the survivor from family and friends. “Family and friends are often there to support victims and will let them know if they see something going on that doesn’t look right,” said Sara. “This makes it easier to maintain power and control over the victim.”

If someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, how can you help? The first way, Sara described, is simply by listening to what the survivor is telling you and believing what they are saying. After this, you can check in with them to see how they are doing. It is also important respect the choices that the survivor is making, even if you do not agree with them. “Victims know their relationship and their situation best,” said Sara. “You should trust that they know what is safest. Just because they’re not planning to leave [their abuser] right now, doesn’t mean that they’re not making a plan to leave and trying to decide when it is safest. You can be a part of developing a safety plan with them.”
