Child and Family Services is excited to share that the renovations for one of their residential facilities are complete! Six kids in Residential Treatment were able to move into their new bedrooms on Monday, July 17.

The agency’s facilities team paved the way for a three-year renovation project having been responsible for design layout, demolition, new wall-studs/drywall, floor installation, painting, building cubbies for the bedrooms and laundry rooms, and interior wall decoration placement. “It was extremely satisfying to see the end result,” stated Monica Bruce, Director of Facilities. “We were all excited for the kids to move in.”

Since the 844 Rear Carriage House building is part of the Delaware Historic District, several collaborations and approvals were needed to change the exterior design. The design layout was strategically planned to accommodate workstations, and the ability for staff members to supervise the kids while doing office work.

When the kids were taken inside for the first time, they screamed with excitement and ever since, they have not been able to stop talking about it. “Kids need a sense of ownership and a private space to reset,” said Dana Delaney, Director of Residential Treatment. “There was not enough space for programming where the kids were staying before. These kids are used to sharing everything, so for them to be able to have their own room is huge.”

Staff members plan on hosting fun activities in the kitchen for the kids like cookie decorating contests, making your own popsicles, etc. Since the kitchen has more than enough room for preparing meals, the space will also serve as an art area. A sensory room and wall mural are also in the works to provide a sense of comfort and help the kids learn how to self-regulate their behaviors and improve their focus.

Child and Family Services Residential Treatment program is the only local agency that serves children ages 5-14. Residential care is an ongoing need in our community and providing quality programming that keeps families close to home and together is super important. “Our program requires consistency and embraces change because families and children change every day,” emphasized Dana. “So, we always have to think outside of the box to determine what’s best and safe for all involved.”

A huge thank you to our residential, technological and facilities team members for your collaboration, dedication and hard work throughout this project.
