Child & Family Services is proud to share that Allison Ernst and her family officially welcomed a new member when they adopted Melody on November 28. November is National Adoption Month; the timing of these proceedings could not be better.

Allison was a first-time foster mother and admits to having some reluctance to taking in a child she knew nothing about. “I didn’t know what to expect and I had a lot of hesitancy because I am a single mom,” she said. “Child & Family Services called me one day and told me she had the perfect match, and she was absolutely right. Melody is the missing piece that we didn’t even know we needed.”

Any doubt that Allison had vanished when she picked Melody up from the hospital. She was able to see Melody’s strength from day one.  “Mel was born prematurely and under two pounds,” explained Allison. “Not only is she healthy now, but she is thriving!”

Jenna Slowik, Senior Permanency Specialist, worked with Melody and the Ernsts to make sure the family had the support they needed as they got to know each other. Jenna saw an instant connection.  “After numerous home visits and conversations with Allison, I knew that Melody was very loved by both Allison and her son Caleb, as well as their extended family,” Jenna said. “They say it takes a village to raise a child, and Melody certainly has a village.”

The courtroom in which the adoption took place was at capacity, with the Ernst ‘village’ supporting Allison, Caleb, and Melody. After the official documents were signed, Melody took a moment to play with her caseworkers with the new ball she had just received. Jenna was among the playful group and lit up as the soon to be three-year-old chased her new toy. “This was one of the most joyful cases I’ve been able to work,” Jenna beamed. “Melody has been made a part of this family, and I am amazed at how seamless her transition has been.”

Child & Family Services is always seeking foster families, and Allison is a great advocate for the agency. Even after Melody’s adoption, Allison wants to keep her home open for another possible ‘perfect match.’ She has advice for anyone looking to foster or adopt. Allison said, “I tell anyone who is interested in foster care to go into it with an open mind because you never know when temporary could become permanent.”
