Since hearing that she and her brother, Rodger, were going to be adopted, four-year-old Winter told everyone that she came across about their upcoming big day. Whether she was in a restaurant, at a playground, or in a store, Winter exclaimed, “My name is going to be Winter Schimenti after I get adopted soon!”

Alison and Marc Schimenti’s foster care journey with Winter started when was released from the NICU. A couple years later, Rodger was born and welcomed into the Schimenti home. According to Alison, the most rewarding part of being a foster parent to Winter and Rodger has been watching them grow and blossom into individuals with their own personalities and feelings. “It’s such a privilege to be in these kids’ lives,” said Alison. “It’s overwhelming we get to be with them forever and give them the life they deserve.”

The day finally came on Friday, July 28 – a group of over thirty family members, friends and loved ones gathered at Erie County Family Court to witness Winter and Rodger’s adoption. It was a joyous mood throughout the afternoon; laughter filled the halls as everyone awaited the big moment.

Winter beamed throughout the proceedings, knowing the significance of what was happening. A bit younger, there were times when Rodger appeared nervous. Winter spotted this and, being a great big sister, made silly faces, patted his hands, and found other ways to make her little brother giggle.

After the documents were signed, Winter and Rodger celebrated by singing the ABCs with Judge Brinkworth and opening a few gifts. Full of energy, the children ran throughout the hallway with Alison and Marc smiling after them.

Alison and Marc mentioned it has felt like Winter and Rodger were part of their family for years, but it was great to finally make things official. Ever since the adoption, Winter has told everyone, “My name is Winter Patricia Schimenti, and I just got adopted!”
