We can all recall a teacher, coach, counselor, or another figure who had a lasting impact on us during our childhood. Eleven-year-old Chase* found a mentor in his case worker, Jenna Slowik. When asked how he felt about Jenna, Chase broke into a huge smile. He said, “She’s the best! She’s kind, thoughtful, fun, and asks questions about me.”

Once a week, Jenna picks Chase up from school and spends time with him before he meets with his family. Recently, Chase surprised Jenna by showing her a project he had been working on without her knowledge – a photography book. Jenna was surprised but amazed by what she saw.

“He named it Chase’s Adventures and the look of pride that was on his face as I flipped through the book was something I will never forget,” beamed Jenna. “There were pictures of nature, animals, sports, and people in his life. It was amazing to get to see the world through his eyes like that.”

Jenna treasures moments like this with Chase. “I was so touched that he opened up to me like that,” said Jenna. “We usually have very normal conversations, which I think is important for kids in care – especially the older ones. I also make sure to have the more important conversations with Chase on a consistent basis, which include things like his family and school. This one was special, though.”

Morgan Schumacher, Program Manager for Foster Care and Adoption, praised Jenna for how she has been able to build a trusting relationship with Chase and other children. “There isn’t a perfect formula on how to teach someone to connect with kids. Jenna has always done this naturally,” said Morgan.

While Jenna hadn’t known about Chase’s interest in photography prior to seeing the book he made, she hopes to nurture his new hobby. “I always look forward to being able to see Chase because of how upbeat and friendly he is,” said Jenna with smile. “I can’t wait to see whatever it is that he shows me next!”

Chase wants to look out for Jenna as much as she does for him. He beamed, “Everyone should know that she is beautiful, sweet and nice to everyone!”
