Even though the federal government has resumed operations, many families are still facing gaps in their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. SNAP gives low-income families the support they need to afford nutritious food and maintain their health and well-being. Some have received only partial funds, while others haven’t received anything at all to this point. C+FS is stepping in to ensure families have what they need.

In one recent home visit, a case planner found a family with only a single loaf of bread for the entire household. The parents shared they had been skipping meals so their children could eat. “These are the moments that show just how urgent the need can be,” said Santana Swan, Program Manager for High Fidelity Wrap and Preventive Services.

To respond, C+FS case planners connect families to local food banks, churches and schools providing meals. When timing, transportation or limited pantry supplies prevent families from accessing food, case planners provide gift cards to ensure immediate needs are met. In urgent situations, employees can purchase groceries directly, using funds made available through monetary donations and gift cards.

Families are facing these challenges during a particularly sensitive time of year. With holidays approaching, many are scrambling to provide meals, often diverting funds from other essentials like utilities to make ends meet. Families with infants face additional challenges, since formula and milk are often in short supply at local pantries.

“The community’s support is vital,” Santana explained. “We can never have too many gift cards so we can get resources for families. The more we have, the more families we can help, especially during times like this.”

Even as state and federal systems work to restore SNAP benefits, C+FS ensures children and families have access to food and basic necessities. By connecting families to community resources and providing immediate assistance, the Agency helps households navigate uncertainty with dignity and care.
