Reese* was seven years old when he came to Child and Family Services (C+FS) Conners Children’s Center.  When he first arrived, Reese struggled with anxiety, anger and getting along with others. Reese’s family, who were facing challenges of their own, were very hopeful the C+FS Residential Treatment Facility Program would help improve their relationship with Reese.

Reese had ups and downs over the years but ultimately thrived in the Residential Program. The C+FS team worked on setting a schedule for him to follow to establish consistency in his life. They also got to know him as an individual and came up with different coping mechanisms to help him manage his emotions. Reese was feeling more comfortable at C+FS, attending school every day and started to develop new friendships. Reese’s relationship with his family improved, and he was going home every weekend and during school breaks. Reese also began to join different community sports leagues.

Unfortunately, while he lived with us, Reese went through some difficult losses with his family that prevented him from returning home. Staff noted that throughout these challenging times, Reese remained optimistic. He expressed interest in living with a close uncle.

The care team reached out to his uncle, who was excited at the idea of having Reese in his home. Reese started visiting his uncle every weekend and began to prepare to move in with him.

During this time, Reese continued to flourish. He started attending youth group and joined a football team, where he was voted MVP at the end of the season.

On his fourteenth birthday, Reese finally moved home with his uncle.

“It was the best birthday present ever!” Reese said with a smile.
