Starting over in a new city is never easy, but for Anna,* it marked the first step toward freedom. With her two children by her side, she left behind a long relationship filled with financial, emotional and religious abuse and set out to rebuild her life.

But with this journey came immediate challenges. Anna wanted to begin divorce proceedings but quickly ran into complications as a new Buffalo resident. That’s when she turned to Haven House.

Anna worked with our Family Court Advocates to navigate matters like visitation, found strength in one-on-one counseling and encouragement in support groups. She also participated in the Haven House Economic Empowerment Program, where she gained tools to rebuild her financial independence and confidence.

Along the way, she connected with Denise Damon, Domestic Violence Advocate and facilitator of our Domestic Violence Education and Parenting After Violence Program. Anna credits Denise and others at Haven House for playing a big role in her healing.

“Since being a part of your program, I have grown,” Anna shared. “Without everyone at the Agency, I could not be who I am today.”

Today, Anna is not only standing on her own but also thriving. She will graduate from college in May and has secured an internship focused on domestic violence where she educates teens about healthy relationships.

For Denise, hearing updates like this reaffirms the importance of the work she does. Reflecting on Anna’s growth, she used the metaphor of “planting seeds” to describe her role.

“It’s nice seeing one of those seeds grow into a flower,” reflected Denise.

Anna’s story is a testament to what’s possible when survivors are met with compassion, resources and a team of support.
