When a domestic violence survivor no longer needs Haven House’s services, it’s rare for their counselor or advocate to hear from them again. That’s why it was especially meaningful when Josie, Supervisor of the Counseling and Advocacy Program, recently received a message from Hannah.*

Hannah had first called the Haven House hotline toward the end of 2020, seeking help after enduring an abusive relationship. With widespread lockdowns still in place due to COVID-19, her counseling sessions with Josie took place over the phone. Together, they talked about what makes a relationship healthy and the warning signs to watch for in future relationships. After six months, with Josie’s reassurance that she was ready, Hannah ended her counseling sessions.

“You have to learn to trust that you make a difference,” Josie explained. “You are meeting people at the hardest moments of their lives and it’s not always nicely wrapped up. You see improvements, but the work continues after they leave.”

So, what did Hannah say in her message to Josie?

“She moved out of the area and began living her new life,” Josie shared. “She is in a healthy relationship now and is doing really well, and she said Haven House gave her the chance to do this.”

Helping survivors regain their sense of autonomy and find safety is only the first step in their journey. Hearing from someone like Hannah serves as a powerful reminder of the long-term impact Haven House has on individuals. While many survivors move on to rebuild their lives far beyond the staff’s reach, these rare moments of reconnection underscore the transformative power of counseling and advocacy. They are a testament to the resilience of the survivors and the unwavering support of staff who guide them through their most difficult moments.

“It is very gratifying,” said Josie. “So often you wonder about where people go, what impact the work we do has on them. To hear from someone years later, who then tells you that your services changed their life, is such an inspiration.”
