At our Community Residence in Cheektowaga, something special is happening one meal at a time.

What started as a child’s love for cooking has turned into a weekly tradition that’s filled more than just plates. It all began when one child asked if they could cook a meal for their peers. The staff, who work hard every day to teach independent living skills, saw this as the perfect opportunity to support a passion and build new skills.

After the first meal was a big hit, other kids started asking if they could take a turn in the kitchen. It didn’t take long before the idea turned into a highly anticipated routine. Now, two kids take the lead each week, planning the meal and creating detailed grocery lists.

“They have been taking so much pride in their cooking and meal planning and are truly excited to do it for each other and the staff,” shared Patience Bateau, Residential Supervisor.

The young chefs make sure everyone is included. Meals are cooked for all the residents and staff, and leftover food is placed in to-go boxes for those who could not be there in person. It’s a chance for everyone to enjoy the children’s efforts, and they are always eager to hear what the staff think of their meal.

“It has been great to see the joy they have in completing something on their own and being able to do all the planning themselves,” added Patience. “It has boosted their confidence, for sure.”

What’s happening in the kitchen goes far beyond cooking. It’s a way for the kids to express themselves and gain independence, all while doing something meaningful for others.
