When Cole* began working with C+FS counselors at Elmwood Village Charter Schools (EVCS), his separation anxiety often caused him to arrive late or leave school early, disrupting his education. After receiving consistent support through C+FS’ new on-site counseling program, Cole recently achieved a major milestone – attending school for five full days in a row without any disruptions.
This progress was made possible by the C+FS Counseling Program’s new satellite program, which launched at EVCS in November 2024 at both the Days Park and Hertel campuses. Bringing mental health services directly to students allows C+FS counselors to meet children like Cole where their challenges occur daily. “For Cole, this was huge,” said Brittany Jordon, a mental health counselor at the Days Park site. “Before, we were struggling to get him through a full day without symptoms that required him to go home. Now, he’s starting to thrive.”
The satellite program at EVCS addresses many of the same mental health concerns seen in C+FS clinics, including trauma, family issues, depression, anxiety, behavioral challenges and attention/hyperactivity issues. Using techniques such as play therapy, cognitive behavior therapy and dialectical behavior therapy, counselors help students develop coping skills, behavior plans and support systems to improve both home and school life.
By offering these services on-site, C+FS removes barriers such as transportation and busy family schedules that might prevent students from accessing care. “It’s incredible that we can provide services to students who might not be able to receive them otherwise,” Brittany said. “It shows how much C+FS cares for our community.”
Through this partnership, C+FS counselors collaborate closely with school staff to develop individualized plans that support each student’s unique needs, helping them succeed both academically and emotionally.
