For the children living in the Community Residence, the start of football season brought an opportunity to spend time together and enjoy a team they all love.
To celebrate the Buffalo Bills kicking off their season, the children gathered for a Bills-themed party. As part of their monthly tradition, they worked together to prepare food before settling in around the television to watch the preseason game. The spread included pizza, wings, cannoli dip and cookies decorated with “Go Bills,” giving the afternoon all the makings of a classic Bills game day.
But beyond the food and football, it was the chance to share the afternoon together that made the experience especially meaningful.
“Before the game started, one of the kids told me that his favorite part of watching the game is cheering with me when the Bills score,” shared Patience Bateau, Residential Supervisor at the Community Residence.
For that child, these moments are about more than what happens on the field. They are about having the undivided attention of people he has formed strong bonds with and getting to share something they all enjoy.
Opportunities like this can be especially meaningful for children who sometimes struggle to build connections with their peers. Coming together around a shared interest creates a comfortable space to interact, have fun and experience the sense of belonging that comes from being part of a group.
“These activities help the children build the socialization skills they will need when they leave us, while also giving them something positive to look forward to,” Patience shared. “Getting to see the joy they have during these moments reminds me why I do this work.”
For Community Residence staff, creating these moments is an important part of supporting the children’s growth. By recognizing what the children enjoy and finding ways to bring them together, staff help them build relationships, strengthen social skills and create positive memories. What may look like a simple afternoon of food and football can become an opportunity for children to feel connected, included and supported.
