When a single mother and her three children arrived in Buffalo, they were stepping into the unknown. Having lived in several states before, they were searching for stability and a fresh start.
Like many families who are new to a community, they faced several obstacles. That’s when Xavier DeLuna, Care Coordinator for our Wraparound Program, stepped in. His role wasn’t to take over, but to stand beside this determined mother as she built a new life for her children.
Wraparound offers families a network of vendors for additional support, but what made this case unique was the mother’s determination to achieve her goals largely on her own.
“I am very proud of this family,” Xavier shared. “The mother took our resources and applied them all on her own.”
Together, they mapped out a plan. Xavier connected the children to medical providers and made sure they were enrolled in school. He also provided them with essentials like beds, cleaning supplies, books and even toys. From there, it was about accountability and encouragement. Xavier described himself as a guide, someone to help the mother stay on track.
Before long, her hard work began to pay off. She found a job and got a car – two of the biggest goals she and Xavier had identified early on. Step by step, the family settled into their new community and began to flourish.
Recently, the case closed with a celebration. It was a joyful reminder of how far this family had come.
“It is a bittersweet feeling,” Xavier reflected. “I have been working with them for over 6 months and felt like I was part of their family.”
Their journey is a testament to resilience, determination and the power of having someone in your corner.
