When Francesca Agugliaro, Case Manager for Child and Family Services Youth Trafficking Prevention Program, talks about Alex*, it is impossible not to hear the pride in her voice. “That’s my baby,” she said. “I’m so proud of Alex.”
Alex was 15 years old when they were referred to the Youth Trafficking Prevention Program due to concerns about possible familial trafficking across borders – complex and deeply challenging circumstances that no child should have to navigate. Although the program is entirely voluntary, Alex participated fully and consistently for five months. They worked closely with Francesca to create a personalized well‑being and safety plan, with a focus on setting boundaries and developing healthy relationships. “Alex remained positive the whole time,” Francesca reflected. “Even while dealing with so much, they stayed engaged. It was incredibly inspiring.”
Alex didn’t just attend sessions – they committed. They took part in every available monthly workshop, arriving with curiosity and determination. Francesca noted that Alex became a leader in the group, and that others would look to them as an example.
Navigating complicated family dynamics remained one of Alex’s greatest challenges, but their growth continued steadily. Alex flourished emotionally, socially and academically. During their time in the program, they earned strong grades and became an honor student. “Alex is a unicorn,” said Francesca when describing Alex. “A youth who becomes an honor student during the program is a rarity.”
Alex became the first graduate of the Youth Trafficking Prevention Program, a shared decision that reflected their readiness to move forward. It wasn’t an ending, but a beginning. The milestone was celebrated with a certificate of completion and a small reward chosen by Alex.
Looking back, Francesca is clear about how much impact the Youth Trafficking Prevention Program is having on those who participate. “It’s rewarding to help them not let what’s happened define who they are,” Francesca shared.
Alex’s journey is a reminder that with the right support, young people can move forward with strength, confidence and hope.
