When Emily* arrived at Haven House with her mother, Linda,* after fleeing domestic violence, she left behind more than just a home. Among the belongings she couldn’t bring with her was one of her favorite possessions: her bicycle.

For many children, a bicycle represents freedom, adventure and the excitement of growing more independent. For Emily, that experience was suddenly interrupted. As staff at Haven House got to know Emily, they learned how much she missed the bicycle she had been forced to leave behind.

Recently, Buffalo-Erie ABATE donated several brand-new bicycles to Child and Family Services (C+FS) for children in our programs. As soon as the donation arrived, staff knew one of the bikes belonged with Emily. She was surprised with a brand-new pink bicycle, complete with a properly fitted helmet. Her face lit up with a smile as she climbed on, and within moments she was pedaling down the street, eager to take it for its very first ride.

“As a mom, all you want is to see your child happy,” shared Linda. “After everything we’ve been through, seeing her so excited over something as simple as a bike was really emotional for me.”

What started as a donation became a meaningful reminder that healing often begins with opportunities to reclaim pieces of normalcy. A new bike offered Emily a chance to embrace the joy of simply being a kid again.

“Learning to ride a bike is something many of us will never forget,” shared Michael Bloom, Community Relations Coordinator at C+FS. “Knowing we can help give a child that experience, through the generosity of our donors, is what makes this work so rewarding.”

Every donation makes a difference, but gifts like these allow us to create deeply personal moments for the children and families we serve. For Emily, one bicycle helped restore a small piece of childhood during a difficult time.
