When children move from one home to another in foster care, the process can feel overwhelming or, even in some cases, demeaning. That’s how Rob Scheer, founder of Comfort Cases, felt when he turned 18 and was removed from his foster home, given only a garbage bag for all his belongings.

After nearly forty years, Rob and his family decided to foster children of their own. When the children showed up at Rob’s home, they also carried their belongings in a trash bag. Rob was mortified, realizing youth today still faced the same challenge that he faced years ago. Having this full circle moment, Rob was called to action and founded Comfort Cases.

“Comfort Cases was created because I know firsthand what it feels like to carry your belongings in a trash bag while in foster care,” shared Rob. “Every child deserves to feel valued and know they matter.”

Nicole Luko, Child and Family Services Foster Care Program Manager, says this is unfortunately a common occurrence. “We see it all the time,” she said. “Kids come into foster care with their clothes, shoes, school supplies and everything they are bringing in one big garbage bag. And that’s just dehumanizing for them.”

Nicole had the opportunity to help pack Comfort Cases at an event held by Rob and Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, where she learned Rob’s story and saw how much care goes into packing a Comfort Case. These cases were then given to children in foster care at C+FS.

Comfort Cases not only included essential items, like hygiene products and new clothing, but also books, toys and blankets. Although these items seem small, they have a big impact on the children when they receive them. “It actually matters, having a sense of dignity, having your own things and feeling like a person,” shared Nicole.

Every child enters foster care with their own stories and struggles. At C+FS, we prioritize making their transition as comfortable and compassionate as possible, emphasizing the child’s individuality and how to empower them at such a vulnerable time.
