Recently, representatives from the Falk School traveled to Albany to participate in a meeting of the New York State Board of Regents as part of the Performance-Based Learning and Assessment Networks (PLAN) Pilot initiative. The meeting provided an opportunity to showcase how performance-based learning and assessment are being implemented at Falk and the positive impact this approach is having on students and educators.
At Falk, students demonstrate their knowledge and skills through meaningful, real-world experiences that build confidence, develop leadership skills and encourage active participation in their learning.
One example of this initiative at Falk involved the PLAN Pilot Leadership Team organizing a career panel focused on realistic and enterprising career pathways. Professionals from a variety of fields visited the school to share their experiences, discuss their careers and answer students’ questions, helping students connect classroom learning to future opportunities.
During their time in Albany, the Falk team shared additional examples of how they are supporting students’ academic, social and emotional growth. By focusing on authentic demonstrations of learning, educators gain a deeper understanding of student progress while creating engaging experiences that prepare students for success beyond the classroom.
“It is an honor to lead the way in such a meaningful way: putting students first,” shared Marley Smith, Director of Instruction at Falk.
Participating in the Board of Regents meeting also highlighted Falk’s role in shaping conversations about the future of education across New York State. Collaborating with education leaders and fellow PLAN Pilot participants reinforced the value of student-centered learning and innovative approaches to assessment.
“Highlighting the hard work of our entire school community as an example for other schools is both an honor and a humbling experience,” Marley said. “Aligning with like-minded leaders energizes us to keep pushing forward with this paradigm shift.”
The Falk team is grateful to the New York State Education Department and the PLAN team for the opportunity to contribute to this important work. Being recognized for the innovative practices taking place at Falk reflects the dedication of its students, educators and staff, who continue to create meaningful learning experiences every day.
