For many young people in the Residential Treatment Program, everyday experiences that others may take for granted can become meaningful moments of growth, confidence and healing. Recently, our residential team had the opportunity to support 14-year-old Katie,* as she prepared for the upcoming warmer weather by shopping for new clothing.

Together, members of the team and Katie explored different clothing options and worked through the process of making thoughtful decisions while staying within a budget. While the outing helped meet an important basic need, it also became an opportunity for Katie to build valuable life skills and experience a sense of independence.

For Katie, the experience carried even greater significance. Excited by the opportunity, she shared, “I’ve never been able to pick out my own clothes!”

The team focused on creating a supportive and empowering environment where Katie felt heard and encouraged to express her authentic self. By guiding rather than directing her choices, they helped develop decision-making skills while maintaining genuine self-expression.

“This was such a fulfilling opportunity to be a part of because I was able to see a side of Katie that I had never seen before,” shared Gabriella Piccininni, Residential Mental Health Therapist. “As a child who struggles with having hope, seeing her express positivity through something as simple as shopping was incredibly heartwarming.”

Gabriella also reflected on the importance of building meaningful connections through these shared experiences. “I am so thankful for moments like these and any moment I can have with our kids to build a deeper relationship and help them grow developmentally,” she said.

These moments reflect the individualized, relationship-based care that the residential team strives to provide every day. Beyond meeting immediate needs, these interactions help create opportunities for youth to have a voice and experience a sense of normalcy through everyday activities.
