Many of our programs begin with understanding and meeting young people where they are. This includes our Youth Trafficking Prevention Program.
The program serves individuals up to age 21 who are at risk of, or have survived, trafficking. To expand prevention in ways that feel approachable, the team began hosting monthly workshops for young people who may be showing risk factors.
Each month, the workshops focus on a different topic rooted in prevention and healing. Past sessions have explored consent and setting boundaries, bullying prevention, staying safe online and navigating social interactions. Depending on the topic, participants might walk through real‑life scenarios, practice communication skills through role‑playing or create personal safety plans.
While some topics may seem simple on the surface, true prevention often starts with strengthening basic protective skills that many teens are still learning.
“A lot of risk factors are tied to things that are just part of being a teenager, like being on social media or figuring out who they are as individuals,” shared Bailie Murty, Youth Trafficking Prevention Program Coordinator. “The goal is to help them understand the risks and consequences in a supportive way.”
Beyond education, workshops provide a safe and welcoming environment where participants can share their experiences and connect with peers who may be facing similar challenges. That sense of community has become one of the most impactful aspects of the program.
“One of the coolest things to hear about is how they have taken the skills they learned from the workshops and used them in their everyday lives,” Bailie shared. “It’s been incredible to see them bond with one another, and important for them to see they are not the only ones going through these issues.”
These workshops have become a meaningful part of the program, offering a space that reflects participants’ interests and needs. They provide authentic connection and support, with moments of growth that continue to influence young people well beyond each session.
