On a sunny afternoon, a special four-legged visitor returned to Child and Family Services’ Delaware campus, bringing smiles and impressive tricks. Buster, a certified PAWS for LOVE therapy dog and SPCA Good Citizen has become a familiar face.

To Kristina Young, a former board member who devoted 35 years of service to Child and Family Services (C+FS), Buster was more than just a pet. Kristina was an influential force within the Agency, but beyond her strategic contributions, she had a passion for bringing joy to others and shared that through Buster.

Since Kristina’s passing in 2023, her brother Jay has continued her legacy ensuring that Buster’s visits remain a source of happiness.

The timing of Buster’s recent self-care visit couldn’t have been better. As Jay and Buster arrived, some children were already outside enjoying the beautiful weather. Buster showed off his tricks like jumping through a hula hoop. The children were quick to join in, taking turns holding the hoop and rewarding him with carrots.

“Buster’s the best! He’s so cute, even when he’s eating,” one child laughed. Another told Jay, “You have a great dog, I wish I could adopt him.”

This brought a smile to Jay’s face, but for him, these visits are about more than playtime with Buster. “I have been so impressed by the children’s behavior. They’ve always been so respectful and listened to every rule I’ve set for how they play with Buster,” he said.

One child even found a creative way to help Buster drink his water by dropping a few carrots into his bowl. “I thought it was pretty innovative. It got him to drink,” Jay smiled.

Jay’s commitment to continuing Kristina’s legacy shines through when asked about it. “It’s a big part. I think of it constantly,” he said. Through Buster and Jay, Kristina’s kindness and dedication to C+FS live on, leaving a lasting impact.
