In a heartwarming celebration, Hillary Banas officially adopted her son, Nicholas, during National Adoption Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of finding permanent homes for children. Nicholas was an infant when he came into Hillary’s life. Now, at four year’s old, they officially become mother and son.
The crowd in the courtroom, filled with family and friends to support Hillary and Nicholas, was so expansive that the judge remarked that it might have been the biggest group she had ever seen for an adoption. It was a true testament to the love surrounding this family.
“I could not have any better friends, family and support system than all of you,” said Hillary, addressing the courtroom. “I love everyone in this room so much, and I love this little boy more than anything. Thank you for all being there for us.”
The day was even more special because everyone wore green, Nicholas’ favorite color. From shirts to scarves, the sea of green in the courtroom symbolized the unity and joy of the day. The room buzzed with excitement as Hillary and Nicholas took the next step in their journey together.
When a local reporter interviewed Hillary after the proceedings, he asked to confirm their names. “Hillary Banas,” replied Hillary. “And this is Nicholas.”
Without missing a beat, Nicholas added to his mother’s answer, “Banas.” Other members of the Banas family, standing behind the cameras, erupted into laughter and applause.
Foster parents like Hillary can be proud of the strong foundation they give to children like Nicholas. There is an ongoing need for foster parents to provide safe, stable and nurturing homes for children in need of temporary care. Foster parents who are open to caring for older children and sibling sets are especially needed, as these groups often face longer waits for placement.
